In 1947, the world was changing…and not in a way we liked. Real food was becoming increasingly processed and frozen. Food science replaced real food, and convenience replaced nutrition. Farming practices, long delivery times, processing, freezing, and aging all diminished the nutrients in our foods.
We knew there was a better way.
It began with two pharmacists (Nat Colby & Mike Goldfarb) and one holistic physician (Dr. Carl Zoll) who wanted to help improve people’s health by providing supplements that were safe, effective, and contained ingredients from natural sources.
They felt the existing supplements at the time did not provide adequate nutrients, and were often difficult to absorb or had side effects that were worse than the conditions they were being used to address.
So, Colby, Goldfarb, and Zoll decided to come together to create a supplement that offered essential nutrients in a form that was easily absorbed by the body.
With this simple goal in mind, Solgar® was born.
Our first ever supplement (Naturvite) was a multivitamin with a blend of 30 essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in a base of natural parsley and vegetables — instead of the usual inorganic fillers. It was packed in an amber glass bottle to preserve freshness and topped with a gold cap.
Sound familiar?
So began the gold standard in vitamins. Over the next 75 years, one supplement grew to over 300, and what began in the United States expanded to over 60 countries.
With each passing year, we learned how to better serve our customers by providing them with quality supplements that met their unique health needs — from sleep to energy to immune support.
Our supplements grew to reflect the diversity of our customers, offering vitamins that are vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher, and halal.
Many things have changed over the last 75 years, but our commitment to providing quality supplements has not.
Now more than ever, we know that there are no shortcuts to quality. We understand the importance of combining quality ingredients from nature with science-backed formulas. We believe it’s critical to continue making our supplements in small batches, and we test them extensively. The world is a different place today than it was 75 years ago – in good ways and otherwise – but when we at Solgar® reflect on the last 75 years, we cannot help but feel gratitude and pride.
